Stabbur

Stabbur

Today these wooden storehouses are a common sight on Norwegian farms. Traditionally they were used for storing the food and grain needed to get through the long dark winters. They sit on wooden or stone pillars to allow space for air to circulate and prevent humidity. In Viking times, a farmer was legally permitted to kill on the spot anyone caught stealing from his stabbur.
